1. Start-up Idea Contest Hosted in April / Bio Korea Exhibition

 
Along with the city of Daejeon, Daejeon TechnoPark offers support for the sustainable growth of the biotech industry, having been designated as a primary agency for the administration of KHIDI’s* tech-based start-up support project, "Start-up Incubation in collaboration with Regional Clusters and Hospitals." As a first step of the start-up incubation project, a start-up idea contest was held, followed by "Bio Korea 2019" hosted by KHIDI and Chungcheongbuk-do Province. At this international exhibition, the winning ideas were displayed in the Daejeon TechnoPark booth which promoted the products and technologies of Daejeon’s outstanding start-ups.

2. Concerted Mind Workshop Held in May
 

Organized by Daejeon TechnoPark and hosted by the city of Daejeon and KHIDI, the "Concerted Mind Workshop for the Biotech Industry, Universities, Research Institutes, Hospitals and Public Organizations" was held on May 23 and 24. The key theme of the workshop was mentoring start-ups, with the aim of facilitating active networking with the biotech cluster and hospitals to stimulate growth for would-be entrepreneurs. On the second day of the workshop, a session was held to discuss the development of the biotech industry in Daejeon. Suman Choi, the head of Daejeon TechnoPark, remarked, "We need to turn our eyes to a broader global market, so that more light can be shed on key role that the biotech industry plays in Daejeon, and to demonstrate Daejeon’s biotech capacities by hosting a large-scale international biotech conference in the city."

3. Win-win & Cooperation Workshop in July
 

Daejeon TechnoPark took part in the Win-win & Cooperation Workshop together with hospitals, biotech cluster and start-ups in the healthcare sector, held at Chonnam National University Hospital on July 10 and 11. About 150 participants from organizations and start-ups that had engaged in KHIDI-supported projects gathered to discuss ways to achieve win-win strategies and cooperation; and the agency that administers the start-up incubation project reported on best practices of cooperation between the regional biotech cluster and start-ups as well as the start-ups’ difficulties and issues. Boyoung Um, the head of the Health Industry Promotion Bureau of KHIDI explained that "hospitals and the biotech cluster play a critical role in taking the initiative for cooperation with start-ups, which is of crucial importance in creating an ecosystem conducive to technological development and innovation in the healthcare sector. With this in mind, KHIDI will continue to provide full support for the creation of such an ecosystem for win-win and cooperation down the road."  

4. Networking to invigorate business starts
 

In Daejeon TechnoPark, the Bio Convergence Center hosted two networking sessions to promote business start-ups in Daejeon’s bio healthcare sector. Session were held on July 25 and August 7, with the participation of bio healthcare firms and hospitals as well as the Bio Convergence Center. Participants engaged in active discussions about ways to encourage business start-up, shared the latest industry news and suggested various ideas. During the second session, Byeonghwan Hyeon, a professor at Daejeon University, gave a special lecture to entrepreneurs. Prof. Hyeon stressed, "The first priority is to know who your customers are. Rather than simply engaging in a phone-call or email, you need to understand the market trends through direct networking."
